I am a huge data nerd. I love all the metrics, analytics and numbers I can get my hands on. In my younger days, I saw everything in black and white. I was either active or lazy, eating well or eating garbage, healthy or sick. Data (along with years of education and experience) has actually helped me to be more comfortable in shades of gray. I am able to see that even though I took a rest day from exercise, I still took steps and moved my body. I can check my watch to see that days of recovery have actually helped improve my sleep and energy levels. And now, with Vessel Health, I can see that, even thought I might not have a PERFECT diet, there are areas in which I’m clearly taking care of my body, and I can also find true opportunities for improvement and growth.
I started with Vessel about six months ago. With a simple urine sample and an app, I was able to find out my levels of vitamins, minerals, cortisol (stress hormone!) and hydration within three minutes. When I saw these results for the first time, I was intrigued. For the first time, I was able to do evidence-based testing on my diet. In other words, I could clearly see how my behavior in the external world affected my internal body. My test showed that was high in cortisol, low in magnesium and actually OVER hydrated. Not only did the app provide me with this information, but I was able to create a specific plan to get these numbers back in line.
While Vessel does sell supplements (and they are awesome, btw. You can create your own personalized mix, eliminating the need for 30 pills in the am), the app also allows you to create a plan with Whole Foods and stress-relieving behaviors. This is a GREAT place to start. For my magnesium levels, I added more green vegetables and cherries to my diet. To reduce cortisol I added meditation minutes to my day as well as breathing exercises. And for hydration, I added in one zero calorie electrolyte drink in place of water. When I tested my levels the following month, I saw a clear improvement in all of these categories.
You also receive a general wellness score with your results. With my TYPE A personality, I was determined to see that increase over time. I’ve made small changes day to day and the numbers have gone up! I can’t wait to see what next month brings.
While I don’t believe in long term tracking of calories, or using data for reward and punishment, having information can truly motivate positive change.
